"Am I blue?" by Bruce Coville is
an amazing story about a boy named Vincent who's getting bulled because people
think he's gay. Then his fairy godfather Melvin came into his life and changed
it forever. At first the thought of having a fairy godfather was kind of
embarrassing never mind that he's gay. After Vincent found out how much him and
Melvin had in common he wished for something, he wished that all gay people in
the world would turn blue. The part that really changed his life wasn't the
wish it was what the wish did to butch (person that was bulling him), it turned
him blue. The main issue of this story is bulling because it has such an impact
on Vincent and Melvin.
Bulling in this story is not just about Vincent
it also happened to Melvis. Melvin died because of the bullies. He was just
walking and a kid out of nowhere came up to him and pushed him into an alley,
and smashed his head against a tire iron and died. Bulling in this story sad because
a bulling killing a kid for being gay or even himself is just sad. After that Vincent
really trusted Melvin because they're a like in some way. Bullying is very pathetic
in this story.
Bulling can really ruin a kid’s life not
physically but mentally. In the story Vincent doesn’t trust Melvin at the beginning
because he thinks that he's trying to make fun of him or he's all apart of a practical
joke. I’m not saying that it's naive of him because I would trust him. But to
think that he's apart of a practical joke. The bulling really got into his head
and now he can't trust anybody because he's scared that it all will back fire
on him. Bulling can mess you up in the head.
The bulling in this story is very pathetic,
especially in the beginning when butch called Vincent a fruit then thought him
a lesson just for not looking at him, and then pushed him into a puddle. Well
to me that is a little extreme for not looking at some one, if someone were not
looking at me then I would probably yell at them to look at me, but never
call them such an offensive name or push them into a puddle. I think I smell a
little insecurity on butch. Butch is basically bulling Vincent for no
reason, he bulling him because butch is probably ashamed of whom he really is.
After Vincent turned everyone who was gay blue he wished that butch was already
blue. So butch was bulling Vincent to get out his anger about being gay
himself. Vincent kind-of saved Butch's life because without Vincent butch
probably would've killed himself. Butch was basically treating Vincent like he
would've treated him self. If butch told his feelings to a physiatrist
before bullying someone just like him.
All in all Vincent and Melvin went threw a
lot of bulling growing up. But before you look at the bullied you should look
at the bullier. Butch should've bullied Vincent for the obvious and also
because he is just like him. So before you judge or bully someone you should
make sure you're perfect. For example if a person with a lot of acne make a
joke about someone else's acne, that's just wrong. Before you make fun of
someone you better be perfect first.
